FUNDarte’s 2018-19 Season opens Saturday, October 6th, 2018 with the 4th edition of our International Festival of The Arts for Youth and Children, Zunzún Children’s Fest featuring music from Rita Rosa Ruesga (Cuba/Miami), theatre performances El camino del bosque by Artefactus Cultural Project (Miami), Martina, The Little Roach by Teatro SEA (New York), and film Títeres: Puppetry in the Caribbean, by Manuel A. Moran and Kristian Otero-Morán (New York/Puerto Rico).

Join us in a fun journey full of music, theatre, puppetry performances, and culture from New York and Miami. You can also enjoy a free screening of a three part documentary series about puppetry in Cuba, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. It is a day to savor together the Latino and Caribbean heritage and to celebrate childhood! The Zunzún Children’s Fest provides top quality cultural programming for families and young audiences in Miami by an array of talented visiting and local artists, creating unforgettable opportunities to experience, appreciate, and learn about Latin America and the Caribbean. Come and enjoy with us Zunzún Children’s Fest, an event made to bring happiness to the entire family!

Synopsis:

El camino del bosque (The Path in the Forest) is inspired by a ritual of the Cherokee people that tells the story of a family and a child named Walasi. After the death of his mother, little Walasi undertakes a trip with his father, in which he must know the life of the forest and face his fears, while discovering sounds, feelings, emotions, and thoughts that will help him to overcome this test.

Approximate running time: 45 minutes with no intermission. Presented in Spanish

La Cucarachita Martina (Martina, the Little Roach) is a Latin rock-n-roll musical based on a popular Cuban and Puerto Rican children’s tale of a little roach who learns many lessons on her journey to find true love.

Approximate running time: 55 minutes with no intermission. Presented in English and Spanish simultaneously.

Títeres: Puppetry in the Caribbean (Títeres en el Caribe Hispano) directed by Manuel A. Morán and Kristian Otero-Morán features a historical journey of the origins of puppet theater in the Cuba, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, and provides a unique insight into the work of many prominent pioneers and puppet companies from the three countries.

Consecutive screenings begin at 2:00 p.m

This event is presented in partnership with Zunzún Arts and Education and the Miami Dade County Auditorium.

About the artists:

Rita Rosa Ruesga is a four-time Grammy award nominee who has impacted over 10,000 children with her Afro-Caribbean and Latin American musical projects for young audiences in Cuba, Mexico, Bolivia, Puerto Rico, Germany, Sweden, Panama, and the USA. Rita has produced several recordings of children’s music, for which she has received international acclaim, and has worked with such renowned artists as Celia Cruz and Ricky Martin, as well as many others. Rita holds a degree in Choral Conducting from the National Art School of Havana and has written 3 children’s books published by Scholastic Books.

Artefactus Cultural Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to researching, producing and promoting theater arts, dance, music, film, visual arts, literature reading and other cultural events emerging. It produces professional training and artistic exchange between different cultures and nations.

Teatro SEA was established in 1985, SEA (Society of the Educational Arts, Inc.), is the premiere Bilingual Arts-in-Education Organization and Latino Children’s Theatre in the United States. SEA has created and produced a combination of educational theatre productions and art workshops/programs specifically designed to examine, challenge and create possible solutions for current educational, social and community issues. Its internationally celebrated programs include school, outdoor, community and main stage performances, workshops and residencies, among others, reaching over 75,000 children and young adults every year.

Manuel A. Morán was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and has worked as an actor, singer, writer, composer, puppeteer, film & theater director and producer in his country, Puerto Rico, Latin America, Europe and the United States. He is the founder and Artistic Director of SEA, Society of the Educational Arts, Inc.

Morán graduated from the University of Puerto Rico with a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Drama. From New York University he obtained a Masters in Musical and Educational Theater, and later a Ph.D. in Educational Theater. He did specialized studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, USA, Menéndez Pelayo University in Santander, Spain and the Holborn Centre for the Performing Arts in London, United Kingdom.
