A CONVERSATION WITH MARÍA JULIANA VILLAFAÑE, TRANSLATOR OF THE BILINGUAL BOOK TALA EN EL SILENCIO / FELLING IN SILENCE OF THE PERUVIAN POET MARCO ANTONIO CORCUERA AND HER RECENT TOUR OF PRESENTATIONS IN PERÚ.

In October, the series named LITERARY WEDNESDAYS starts its 4th Season, with the support of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language (ANLE), Baquiana Literary Magazine and the Spanish Cultural Center of Miami (CCEMIAMI), has as special guest, the poet, writer, playwright, musical composer and translator María Juliana Villafañe to talk about her recent tour of presentations of the book TALA EN EL SILENCIO / FELLING IN SILENCE in Perú.

Every second Wednesday of the month, the series LITERARY WEDNESDAYS invites different authors, in order to continue with the contribution of the cultural development of the community and the promotion of the language and literature in Spanish in the United States of America. The programs are coordinated and conducted by Maricel Mayor Marsán, president of the Florida Delegation of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language (ANLE) and director of Baquiana Literary Magazine.

The book of poetry TALA EN EL SILENCIO / FELLING IN SILENCE of the distinguished Peruvian poet Marco Antonio Corcuera was translated into English by the Puerto Rican poet María Juliana Villafañe, at the request of the Foundation Marco Antonio Corcuera (FMAC) and it was published later on by the César Vallejo University in a bilingual format.

MARÍA JULIANA VILLAFAÑE

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, she is a poet, writer, playwright, translator and composer of popular music.  She is correspondent of several literary magazines and she is a member of the PEN Club of Puerto Rico, of the Association of Writers of Mérida in Venezuela, of the Argentinian Society of Letters, Arts and Sciences (SALAC) and of the Poetic Lyceum of Benidorm in Spain. She is a full member of the International Academy of Culture, Brasilia DF – Brazil. She represents the Cultural Institution Mother América (AMA) of Argentina in the United States and Puerto Rico and she is the international representative of the Bukowski House of Chile in Puerto Rico and Miami.

She has published the poetry books: Dimensiones en el amor (Ramallo Brothers Publications, Puerto Rico, 1992), awarded in New York with the Prize Palma Julia de Burgos; Entre Dimensiones (Editorial Isla Negra, Puerto Rico, 2002); Volar sin alas (Ediciones Baquiana, Miami, 2012); Dimensiones (Poetic Spring – digital edition – Perú, 2020); and Aires de Tormenta, (Literarte – Spain, 2022). In fiction, she has published the youth story Aurora y sus Viajes Intergalácticos (Planeta Editorial, 2003). The deceased jazz composer Jon Lucien included some of her song lyrics in several of his records: Man From Paradise (1993), Endless is love (1997) y Jon Lucien by Request (2003). Her name was included in the list of Puerto Rican writers that reside in the continental U.S.A., in the Encyclopedia of Spanish in the United States – Yearbook of the Cervantes Institute (Santillana Editorial, 2008).

She is the official translator into English of the Poetic Anthology of Marco Antonio Corcuera, Tala en el Silencio/Felling in Silence, one of the most important poets and writers of his country, acknowledged for his famous Cuadernos Trimestrales de Poesía, magazine that he directed and where he welcomed for almost thirty years the best poetry of Peru, as well as emerging poets of his country, and the greatest voices of Hispanic America. The magazine was declared recently as Cultural Heritage of the Nation by the Ministry of Culture of Perú (2025).

The presentation of the Poetic Anthology of Marco Antonio Corcuera, Tala en el Silencio/Felling in Silence of Marco Antonio Corcuera took place at the International Book Fair of Lima, Perú, in august of 2025, as well as a follow up tour in different cities of the country. This is the topic of conversation in this virtual encounter.
