Conversation and master class with Raúl Monge

Date

Saturday, March 5, 2022.

Schedule

7:00 pm

The Cultural Center of Spain in Miami and Miami Dade College’s Miami Film Festival co-present a one-hour masterclass and conversation with Madrid-based artist and filmmaker Raúl Monge. Monge created the original poster artwork for the 2022 Miami Film Festival.

Filmmaking is a collaborate art form. While authorship is assigned a director, we assign that authorship not necessarily to the individual themselves, but perhaps subconsciously to a collective team that is organized in the director’s name. In his feature film work over the past twenty years, Raúl Monge has belonged to the directorial teams of Spanish filmmakers Nacho Vigalondo, Gabe Ibáñez and Jaume Balagueró, as well as filmmakers Guillermo del Toro and Richard Stanley.

In this fascinating peek-behind-the-curtain masterclass, Monge discusses his collaborations on notable projects such as Pan’s Labyrinth (06), Hellboy II: The Golden Army (08), Pacific Rim (13), Automata (14), Colossal (16), Color Out of Space (19) and The Vault (21). These films combine fantasy, myth-building, action and elaborate visual styles, and Monge plays a crucial role in developing the look of the film’s otherworldly characters and production design. Monge recalls conversations with his directors and how he approaches the process of transferring ideas into pictures – the “inner sight” he must find on each project to develop an original world.

Along the way, Monge discusses how he has parlayed his fascinating career in cinema into success as an advertising director for one of Madrid’s top agencies, User T38, and in pursuing his own visions as an auter with his first two short films – “Hope” (19), and “Suburbs Apology” (22), which will world premiere at this year’s Miami Film Festival on March 6th at Tower Theater Miami.

This event will take place in Spanish.
