The Cultural Center of Spain in Miami (CCEMiami) and the Miami-Dade County Auditorium’s Away from Home Series, in collaboration with The Roxy Theater Group, present HAMBRE, a comedy that reflects the marginality of the Baroque era through the poetry and picaresque novels of Spain’s Golden Age.
Drawing from excerpts of works such as La Pícara Justina, Lazarillo de Tormes, Rinconete y Cortadillo, and Sancho Panza, as well as poems by great writers including Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Góngora, and many others, this theatrical piece offers a staged reading of that hungry, witty, and cunning Spain, where language becomes the only tool of power.
HAMBRE portrays, with sharp humor and ingenuity, the subversive spirit of the society of that time. A play that speaks not only of physical hunger, but also of the hunger to be, to belong, and to speak.
A feast of words in times of scarcity, HAMBRE is also a tribute to language as a refuge and to marginality as a form of resistance. A production that seeks to make the classics resonate with our present day.
The play, performed in Spanish, is written and directed by Eugenia Sancho. Featuring an intimate and deeply contemporary staging by her company, Sensodrama, the production stars Betsy Rodríguez, Letty Carmona, Catalina Arenas, and Eugenia Sancho herself.
