The Koubek Center at Miami Dade College, in collaboration with #CCEMiami, presents The Barcelona Film and Human Rights Festival
August Fri 20 & Sat 21 in person Free RSVP.
Sunday 22nd Free online -A link and password will be sent by email on 22nd.
A selection including short films from Spain, Argentina, Burkina Faso, Brazil and Netherlands, explores with passion, humor and a big heart some of the most important issues of the day.
This years festival at the Koubek Center addresses issues of global reach such as migration, gender violence, or the control of food by multinational corporations. But then, it also explores more personal matters, such as bullying and the fight for respect by members of the LGBTQ community in several countries. The selection features films ranging in length from one to 37 minutes, including both documentaries and works of fiction. Thematically, the films range broadly, including Brazils Contramaré, which focuses on the moving of a youth orchestra bringing music and hope to a violent shantytown in Rio de Janeiro; and Burkinabe Bounty, documenting the local resistance in Burkina Faso for food sovereignty; but also the absurdist, darkly comical Una Cabrita Sin Cuernos, (A Little Goat Without Horns) from Argentina, based on actual events, in which a childrens book sparks the paranoid fears of the military ruling the country. Some of these films are sharply drawn vignettes, illuminating the hidden drama of poverty (Spains Macaroni) or slyly commenting on world destruction (Spains Broken Dreams). Others, such as Spains Diversidad y Tierra (Diversity and Lands), documents testimony by members of the LGBTQ community from places as disparate as Honduras, Bulgaria, and Morocco, discriminated against and sometimes mistreated within an inch of their lives by the state and official institutions for being different.
All films feature Spanish or English subtitles, depending on the original language.
