“Whatever it was, though, it must have worked: el Cigala delivered two long sets that held even the non-Spanish-speakers in the crowd spellbound. For those fluent in the language, it must have approximated a religious experience” – The Georgia Straight
Diego el Cigala is one of Spain’s most brilliant and innovative Flamenco singers. For this intimate concert he will be performing many of his most beloved Flamenco pieces and other greatest hits from his vast discography. There have been many key experiences that placed Diego on his artistic path but in the year 2000 he experienced a new epiphany, something unexpected that took over him, forever changing his artistic future. This was the unexpected appearance of a man and an instrument that would revolutionize his musical approach. The man was the late Cuban maestro Bebo Valdés and his instrument, the piano. This inspired Cigala to transcend Flamenco and the usual guitar that always accompanied him to reach other worlds. After his death Bebo would be succeeded by his son Chucho Valdés who is widely considered one of the greatest living musicians in the history of Afro-Cuban Jazz. In 2005, Diego met Jaime Calabuch, “Jumitus”, a gypsy master pianist from Catalan. This partnership led to the new intimate show that Diego presents to us. More intimately close to his audience than ever, Cigala will touch the hearts of those who have the privilege of attending one of these unique concerts: Diego and Piano!
