The series named Literary Wednesdays beings in October of 2026 its 5th Season, with the support of the Delegation of Florida of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language (ANLE), Baquiana Literary Magazine and the Spanish Cultural Center of Miami (CCEMIAMI), with a special guest, Dr. Raquel Chang-Rodríguez, who will talk to us about her investigations on The relation of the martyrs of Florida (c.1619) by Luis Jerónimo de Oré.

Every second Wednesday of the month, the series Literary Wednesdays invites different authors, in order to continue with the contribution of the cultural development of the community and the promotion of the language and literature in Spanish in the United States of America. The programs are coordinated and conducted by Maricel Mayor Marsán, president of the Florida Delegation of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language (ANLE) and director of Baquiana Literary Magazine.

The event will be located on a permanent basis to the public at the BAQUIANA TV Channel on YouTube on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, from 12:00 a.m. The event will be conducted in SPANISH.

About the manuscript:

The relation of the martyrs of Florida (C.1619) by Luis Jerónimo de Oré is a manuscript or narrative text that reports in Spanish the kidnapping by the guale Indians of Francisco de Ávila, a missionary of the seraphic order that arrived to Florida in 1595, commissioned by Felipe II to continue with the evangelization among the indigenous population, after the departure of the jesuits in 1571 due to the destruction of the mission of Santa María of Ajacán.

RAQUEL CHANG-RODRÍGUEZ

Distinguished Professor of hispanic american literature and culture at City College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY). Among her most recent books are: Talking Books with Mario Vargas Llosa. A Retrospective (Amazon, 2020); Cartografía garcilasista (Alicante: Universidad de Alicante, 2013); and Between the sword and the pen. The Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and his ‟Real Comments” (Lima: Fondo Editorial, 2010). She is co-director of the Project History of the literatures in Perú, whose volumes are of free Access at the official sites of the Cervantes Institute and the House of the Peruvian Literature. She is a numerary member of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language (ANLE), a correspondent member of the Real Academy of Language (RAE) and the Peruvian Academy of Language (APL). She is a Honorary Professor at the University of San Marcos in Perú and Doctor honoris causa by the National Helenic University of Athens, Greece.
