Fotografiando en América Latina. Ensayos de crítica histórica, a book published in Venezuela in 2009, was edited again in 2017 by the editorial of the Centro de Fotografía, Montevideo, Uruguay. In the present edition, 13 texts on Latin American photography of 19th-century and early twentieth has been complemented with 62 illustrations from works that belong to private and institutional collections of Europe, the United States and Latin America. In the texts, the author displays the results of continued research on the ways photography participates, at the studied stage, in the elaboration and dissemination of discourses about the problems of nation, race, ethnicity and class in the emerging countries of the area, some of them dismissed in historical studies. He is also interested in tracing the genealogy of particular traditions of visual representation inside the region.

The present book is neither a photo-story ―or a history analyzed from the perspective of photography― nor a history of photography as a recount of the movements and dynamics experienced by this medium of visual production over time, even though it is connected to both. In the texts of Fotografiando en América Latina. Ensayos de crítica histórica, a plural methodology leads the reader through the understanding of photography as a device that provides a specific form of information: the visual, on social, political and cultural processes that unfold in public space. The products of this device communicate, relate, cross and accompany with the most varied discursive forms, from oratory and painting to photography as artistic production, and participate in the struggles deployed around these discourses by social actors in conflict.
